Partner Services Training is designed for disease intervention specialists (DIS) providing Partner Services in health departments and other related settings. Our offerings are for local, state and federal DIS who may increase their knowledge and skills in Interviewing, Counseling, and Field Safety.

Passport Track A: For Medical/Referring Providers Who Refer Patients to Partner Services

This brief CDC web-training for medical or referring providers on Partner Services is available at PSReferral.org. The training includes transition statements to introduce the topic in the patient encounter, and the role of health department staff in Partner Services follow-up.On the basis of evidence of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of Partner Services, CDC strongly recommends that all persons with newly diagnosed early syphilis receive Partner Services with active health department involvement. One hour of CME, CNE, or CHES credit is available.

Passport Track B: Partner Elicitation and/or Notification Primarily for HIV

This track is for providers interested in describing Partner Services to patients and who will conduct partner elicitation. Information collected is forwarded to a Partner Services provider (Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS)). It includes 13 sequenced online modules followed by a 3-day classroom training.

The Track B 3-day classroom training will use HIV related exercises, activities, and role-plays, to:

  • Discuss the importance of partner management and how it is conducted confidentially.
  • Develop skills for interviewing and counseling patients with HIV in order to identify sex partners and social contacts for referral to medical evaluation.
  • Incorporate partner services into existing practices.
  • Emphasize the importance of HIV testing and linkage to care and early treatment for those living with HIV.

*Course also has ability to address STD co-infection.

This track is for providers who conduct elicitation and/or notification and referral activities for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, and HIV.Syphilis case management and Visual Case Analysis (VCA) are not addressed. It includes 13 sequenced online modules followed by a 3-day classroom training.

The Track C 3-day Classroom training will be an intensive skills-based application of the core partner services material presented in the online modules. The training uses exercises, activities, and role plays that focus on Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis (but not in-depth syphilis case management), and HIV enabling participants to practice the following:

  • Conduct interviewing/counseling sessions,
  • Conduct field investigations,
  • Conduct partner/social contact notification (to include STD co-infection).

Passport Track D: Partner Elicitation and/or Notification and Referral for All Diseases (with Syphilis Case Management and Visual Case Analysis (VCA)

This track is for providers who conduct all aspects of Partner Services, including Syphilis case management and Visual Case Analysis (VCA). This track includes 14 sequenced online modules (plus an optional LOT system module), in addition to a VCA-E3 webinar series followed by a 5-day classroom training.

Visual Case Analysis Webinar Series:

The VCA-E3 webinar series is delivered by PTC instructors and is a pre-requisite for all Track D participants, before attending the 5-day instructor-led classroom training. The course will provide the fundamentals of Visual Case Analysis (VCA). Participants receive instruction around plotting basic medical and other pertinent facts, "ghosting" primary lesions, and how to make preliminary source/spread determinations. The series consists of three 120 minute live webinars.

The Track D 5-day instructor-led training is an intensive skills-based application of the core partner services material presented in the online module training program. Individualized instructor feedback is given on mock interviews (role plays) to each participant.The course emphasizes the development of skills and techniques for interviewing STD and HIV patients which include the following:

  • Communication skills
  • Problem solving
  • Motivational techniques
  • Identifying sex partners and social contacts for referral to medical evaluation
  • Investigation and notification tools to include the internet feedback
  • Introduction to Syphilis case management
  • Syphilis Visual Case Analysis
  • Introduction to the LOT System

Passport Browse Track: Access individual Passport modules (refresher training)

Take any of the individual online modules, in any sequence. A certificate is available for each successfully completed module. This may interest veteran Partner Services providers wanting refresher training, or those interested primarily in the Disease Concepts content, formerly known as CDC's Employee Development Guide (EDG).

Fundamentals of Sexually Transmitted Disease Intervention (Fund of ISTDI)—Spanish Only

This 5-day course is designed for counselors, managers of staff who conduct partner services, public health nurses, or other prevention workers who need comprehensive partner service skills. Focusing on gonorrhea and chlamydia, this class will cover interview periods, communication, assertiveness, problem solving, the interview format, field investigations, partner notification and referral, and a brief overview of case management. This course does not provide in-depth syphilis case management or visual case analysis.

Training/Operations for Safety Around Field Encounters (TOPSAFE)

This 2-day interactive skill-building course is for public health professionals who are involved in fieldwork, such as full-time partner services providers (e.g., disease intervention specialists) or community outreach workers. Participants experience situations associated with basic safety principles, interpersonal communications, and problem solving. This course is available as a trainer's manual.
