Guy Sebastian reveals his weight loss battle with binge eating (2024)

Guy Sebastian has opened up about his struggles with mental health and weight lossin a new tell-all interview.

The 42-year-old singer-songwriter and father-of-two discussed his battle to maintain a healthy weight since his rise to stardom twenty years ago on Tuesday during the debut episode of the Mental as Anyone podcast.

'I was the fat kid on Idol, I was called the fat kid... I was just a bit chubby,' Guy admitted.

'I was pretty unhealthy, I would binge eat [and] my approach to losing weight was pretty extreme and I would just get nowhere.'

He told hostJonathon Moran that 'criticism' directed at him both externally and internally was behind his unhealthy eating habits.

'I think what I didn't do was acknowledge it and that goes for heaps of stuff I've had to overcome,' he said.

'I realised when I would eat a lot... it was around times of criticism.'

The Angels Got Me Here hitmaker, who soared to stardom after winning the debut season of Australian Idol in 2003, also discussed his battles with depression.

'I feel like I've been fairly dark in certain places,' Guy admitted.

'If I had to say what my definition of depression was, I would say I've ticked every box at a certain time in my life.'

He said that when he first entered the limelight people in show business never discussed their mental health in public because, he said, it was seen as 'weakness'.

'Now peoples heroes are talking about it…its reassuring it just normalises [mental health] a bit more,' he said.

During the discussion Guy also talked about his relationship with social media and his fear of being cancelled.

'Everyone is a target of peoples' opinion,' he said.

Guy's comments come after he received online backlashwhen he claimed to be suffering from exhaustion.

Fans mocked the star after he said he was 'tired' of the work grind it takes to be a successful musician.

While some fans jumped to the multimillionaire's defence, others were quick to roast the performer for feeling worn out by the hustle of the industry.

It all began when Guy commented, 'I'm so tired,' beneath a video posted by singer Amy Shark as she vented about the social media content she has to put out.

She jokingly told her followers not to become musicians before listing all the clips she has to upload to remain relevant - a sentiment to which Guy claimed to relate.

Users were quick to respond to his comment, roasting The Voice coach for his complaints about working hard for his successful career.

'Right. And for independents it's like shooting fish in a barrel at the moment,' one person wrote alongside the rolling eyes emoji.

'Please stay home then. You're insufferable,' another said, while someone else added: 'Get bigger problems than needing to make some TikToks.'

A third commented, 'Tired of what?' as another disgruntled viewer echoed: 'Tired of robbing young talent of their dreams? Cough couch [sic] Idol 2003.'

While many slammed the music artist for expressing his exhaustion, some fans quickly came to his defence.

One person commented: 'What the label for! [sic] They should be doing it for you guys.'

'Honestly! Interesting and refreshing to hear you say that,' another said, while a third added: 'Me too, man. Me too.'

Someone else wrote: 'I can imagine coz I see you on all platforms all the time! We love you no matter what. Take time offline and enjoy your beautiful family.'

It comes as Guy is set to return to The Voice Australia this year as a coach alongside LeAnn Rimes, Adam Lambert, and Kate Miller-Heidke.

The four stars were all spotted leaving the Channel Seven Sydney offices together early last month.
