Tequila Sunrise: A Classic co*cktail

A tequila sunrise is a well known co*cktail made popular in the 1970s, however, was first created around 50 years previously. It’s called a tequila sunrise because it looks just like a stunning sunrise.

This version of the retro classic is made with matcha green tea to create an extra layer on top. You could actually call it a traffic light co*cktail because of the stop-get ready-go colours!

This impressive matcha tequila sunrise co*cktail is so easy to whip up in just a few minutes. To get the layered effect, the ingredients do have to go in a certain order. Firstly, the grenadine, then the ice full to the top to help keep the layers, followed by the tequila blanco, next is the orange juice and then lastly is the matcha green tea. Add one or two maraschino cherries for that co*cktail-bar-aesthetic.

I love adding a sprinkle of spice to the combination of matcha and orange juice such as apple pie spice or cinnamon.

Feel free to make it a virgin sunrise co*cktail by omitting the tequila. You could also swap the tequila for white rum or vodka if you wish.

If you would prefer not to have grenadine, you can switch for a more natural tart cherry syrup. However, I have found that the colour of tart cherry syrup isn’t as bright red as grenadine but it still works to some degree.

Does Tequila Pair Well With Matcha Green Tea?

Lots of various types of alcohol goes well with green tea and other teas too. You can try out many flavour combinations with tipsy tea co*cktails. I personally think that matcha green tea pairs perfectly with lighter spirits such as tequila blanco, vodka or white rum. A modern alternative to a tequila sunrise co*cktail would be switching out the tequila for vodka for a vodka sunrise, or white rum for a rum sunrise. You can always make it a virgin co*cktail by omitting the alcohol all together.

Are Matcha co*cktails Healthy?

There are lots of studies that suggest that matcha green tea is super healthy for us. Tea contains lots of antioxidants that fight free radicals in our body to keep us young and healthy. However, adding tea to co*cktails may not have the desired healthy effect! It’d always a good idea to drink responsibly and have everything in moderation!

Is Matcha Safe to Drink Everyday?

Many people do indulge in matcha everyday and while it is considered safe to drink, it’s always best to enjoy in moderation. Matcha contains high levels of caffeine which can sometimes cause side effects. And don’t forget to always check with your health care provider.

Is Grenadine Alcoholic?

Grenadine is not an alcoholic drink. It is a bright red syrup made from pomegranate juice and sugar. It is used in many co*cktails and virgin co*cktails such as a Shirley Temple. If you prefer a healthier less sugary alternative, tart cherry syrup can be used. It doesn’t quite have the same bright effect but still works to some degree.

What Type of Alcohol is Tequila?

Tequila is a trendy Mexican distilled liquor (alcohol) made from the weber blue agave plant. I like using tequila blanco (white tequila) for this matcha tequila sunrise co*cktail recipe. Alternatively, you can use white rum or vodka if you prefer.
