Twitter Is Having A ‘Mare Over the Difference Between Crumpets And Pikelets (2024)

Crumpets are delicious. Pikelets are delicious. So what’s the problem? Well, apparently Twitter is having an absolute ‘mare after someone posted a photo of crumpets (these are definitely, crumpets, yeah?) and called them pikelets. And now everyone’s fighting and it’s all too much.

The argument about what these are called has reared its ugly head once again thanks to a recent episode of Sunday Brunch.

A while back, Michelle Dewberry, who you may recognise as the winner of 2006’s series of The Apprentice, shared a photo on Twitter of a little snack she’d whipped up for herself. No problem with that, right? Well, actually there was a problem. She captioned her snap: “I am eating these as I type (I am great at multitasking). I cannot help but call these Pikelets, much to @Sjopinion10’s disagreement... What do you call them?”

So, Michelle’s husband Simon says that these are in no way pikelets. And it seems like A LOT of Twitter agrees. After posting the photo of the *cough* crumpets *cough*, Michelle had people telling her once and for all that pikelets are completely different to what she was eating.

Pikelets, as a rule, are similar to crumpets in that they are made from an unsweetened batter of water or milk, flour, and yeast, but pikelets are a “thinner, more pancake-like griddle bread”, according to Wikipedia.

Judging by the responses on Twitter, the general consensus is that what Michelle was eating were indeed crumpets, but a lot of Northerners call them pikelets.

After getting #crumpets trending on Twitter, Michelle commented: “Lol. #crumpets now trending. Well done gang. Alas, to me (and seemingly many other sensible Northerners), these will always be #pikelets and nothing, nor nobody will change my mind. So there. (And yes, the thin ones can be Pikelets too, I don’t mind).”

So, in summary: we say crumpets, Michelle says pikelets. Let’s call the whole thing off.
