WOODS, 57, of COLTS NECK TOWNSHIP, died Thursday at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was a used equipment manager for Foley Machinery, Piscataway, for 35 years. He was a member of the Colts Neck Reformed Church and the Holland Orchard Country Club, Colts Neck.

He served in the the Army from 1955-1957. Mr. Woods was born in Elizabeth and lived in Howell Township before moving to Colts Neck 25 years ago. His first wife, Norma, died in 1990. Surviving are his second wife, Patricia; a son, Gregory Woods, Columbus, a daughter, Robyn Lynn Woods, Toms River; three brothers, Charles, Piscataway, Art, San Antonio, Texas, and Jimmy, New Jersey; and two sisters, Eleanor, Florida, and Dottie Leuschner, Venice, Fla.

HARRY M. PANAS, 77, of BRICK TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at home. He was a mechanic for 10 years at Nestle Foods Freehold, retiring 12 years ago. He was a member of the National Council of Senior Citizens, and a former member of Elks Lodge 2151, Brick. Mr.

Panas was born in Carnegie, and lived in Bayonne before moving to Brick 25 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Anne Waku-linski Panas; a son, Gary, Venice, a daughter, Melanie Burdorf, South Orange, and three grandchildren. Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, Toms River, is in charge of arrangements. JOHN E. SCHWARTZ, 73, of STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, died Thursday at Burlington Memorial Hospital, Mount Holly.

Mr. Schwartz, known as "Jeff," was a crane operator for Simpson, Brown and Kenlan, Newark. He was a life member of the Operating Engineers of America Local 825, and the Moose Lodge 1575, both of Manahawkin, Stafford Township, American Legion Post 170, Rochelle Park, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10092, Barnegat Township. He was a captain in the Marine Corps and the Army Air Force during World War II. He was born in Avon and lived in Roselle Park before moving to Stafford Township in 1964.

His wife, Virginia K. Williams Schwartz, died in 1980. Surviving are two sons, Duane Maine, and Derek Parkertown, Little Egg Harbor Township; a daughter, Daryl V. McFadden, Maine; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Thos L.

Spearel was born in Marlborough, and lived in Manasquan before moving to Lakewood five years ago. Her husband, Warren died in 1992. ALBERT RUSSELL VAUGHN, 47, of Brooklyn, formerly LAKEWOOD, died Wednesday at New York University Hospital. He was a truck driver for Top Job Personnel New York. and Congregation Oheb Shalom, South Orange. Mrs. Lorber was born in Newark lived in Maplewood and in West Long Branch before moving to Boynton Beach five years ago.

Her husband, Daniel, died in 1983. Surviving are two daughters, Madlyn Aaron, West Long Branch, and Erica Fein, Princeton; a sister, Carol Wische, Watchung; and five grandchildren. He was a self-employed thoroughbred horse trainer for 65 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Horsem*n's Benevolent and Protective Association, Oceanport. Mr. Moran was born in Oceanport and lived in Shrewsbury for the past 45 years. Surviving are his wife, Katherine Jane Hounihan Moran; a son, Richard "Bucky" Moran, Red Bank; two daughters, Barbara Wolfe, Leonardo, Middletown Township, and Dorothy Moran, Old Bridge Township; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. FRANK ANTHONY PICCIOTTI, 52, of LONG BRANCH, died Thursday at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was a self-employed used car dealer. Mr. Picciotti was born in Long Branch and was a lifelong Shore area resident. Surviving are his wife, Susan Au-mack Picciotti; two sons, Frank Ocean Grove, and Max at home; a daughter, Laura Lea Picciotti, at home; and three sisters, Sarah Parenti and Mary Scallo of Long Branch, and Margaret Lambrose, Chicago.

Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch, is in charge of arrangements. MICHAEL J. PINTO, 88, of Bel-ford, MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, died Thursday at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel Township. He owned and operated Ace Auto Sales in West Keansburg, Hazlet Township, for 60 years, retiring in 1965. He was a leader in the V.I.P.

Senior Club of Middletown, a member of the Middle-town Senior Center and a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Pinto was born in Newark and lived in Irvington before moving to Belford 38 years ago. His son, Joseph M. died in 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Emily Bagnol Pinto; two sons, John Charles, Newport News, and Frank Russell, Fairfield, Iowa; a sister, Rose To-dino, Point Pleasant; four grandsons and three great-grandchildren. He was a salesman for many years at Century Button Manhattan. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Singer was born in New York and lived in Forest Hills before moving to Plamfield 23 years ago. Surviving is a sister, Mildred Bartel, Englishtown.

He was a production line worker for many years at Jiffy Manufacturing Franklin Township, retiring in 1983. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of the American Legion Post 143, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Highlands.

PAUL N. D'ANGELO, 90, of the Bronx, whose son lives in WEST LONG BRANCH, died Tuesday. He retired in 1969 from New York City Transit System. He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, the Bronx. Mr.

D'Angelo was born in Italy and was a resident of New York. His wife, Antoinette, died in 1993. ANTOINETTE SARNO DE PHILLIPS, 79, of HOLMDEL TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at home.

She was a maintenance worker for the Hazlet Township Board of Education, at Raritan High School in Hazlet, for 25 years, retiring five years ago. She was 'a communicant of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, and a member of the Bayshore Senior Center, both of Keansbury. Mrs. De Phillips was born in Brooklyn and lived in Holmdel for many years.

Her husband, Warren, died in 1988. Surviving are two daughters, Brigid Mc Lavish, with whom she lived, and Carmela Brendel, Virginia; five sisters, Carmela Abate, Rose Walsh, Mary De-Marato, Theresa Rogers, and Henrietta Tumminia, all of Brooklyn; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was a letter carrier for the Jersey City Post Office for 30 years, retiring in 1973. Mr.

Biroc was born in Hoboken and lived in Little Falls before moving to Manchester. His wife, Maria Sengstacke Biroc, died in November. Surviving are three sons, Robert W. and Bruce Biroc, both of Nyack, N.Y., and William Biroc, Pennsylvania; a brother, William Biroc, New Jersey; and seven grandchildren. JAMES GEOIA 68, of Clifton, formerly of TOMS RIVER, died yesterday at Beth Israel Hospital, Passaic. He was a retired mechanic and the owner of Accurate Transmission Rochelle Park. He was a member of the Rochelle Park American Legion Post 170, arid a parishioner of Our Lady of Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Paramus. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Mr.

Geoia was born in New York and lived in Toms River before moving to Clifton two years ago. His wife, Eleanor Bonaquaro Geoia, died in 1992. Surviving are two sons, Joseph, Fayetteville, N.Y., and James, Leonia; a daughter, Bernadette Ihne, Clifton; a brother, Leonard, Teaneck; two sisters, Julia Costa and Ann Costa, both of Long Island; and two grandchildren. HICKSON HOFFMAN, 67, of South Beach Haven, LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, died yesterday at Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manahawkin, Stafford Township. She was a home economics teacher at Cinnaminson High School for 23 years, retiring five years ago. She was a member of the National Education Association and the New Jersey Education Association. She was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio, where she received her bachelor of arts degree. Mrs.

Hoffman was born in Seville, Ohio, lived in Cherry Hill Township and was a resident of Palm Harbor, and South Beach Haven for the past five years. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, George a son, Gregory South Beach Haven; three brothers, George Hickson, Lakeside, Ohio, James Hickson, Albuquerque, N.M., and John Hickson, Merion, Ohio; a sister, Margaret L'Orange, Shaker Heights, Ohio; and a grandchild. She was a volunteer worker. She attended St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Toms River. Mrs. Jefferson was born in South River and lived in East Keansburg, Hazlet Township, and in Union Beach before mov- institutions "are certainly more literate, on average, than those who do not go to college or do not graduate," the report said.

"But their levels of acy range from a lot less than impressive to mediocre to near alarming, depending on who is making the judgment," the report said. This "forces us to acknowledge that the self-satisfied story we've been telling ourselves about our higher education system is not supported by the facts," said Albert Shanker, president of the American Federation of Collegeville, Pa. in 1956. Mrs. Williamson was born in Philadelphia and lived there before moving to Toms River in 1957.

Surviving are her husband, James two daughters, Laura Gebers, Toms River, and Linda Martin, East Hanover Township; her mother, Irene Merrick Kelley, Bakersfield, a sister, Diane Marcum, San Francisco; and three grandchildren. HARRY HORNER, 84, a set de signer who received Academy Awards for "The Heiress" in 1949 and "The Hustler" in 1961, died of pneumonia Monday in LOS ANGELES. Mr. Horner was nominated for a third Oscar in 1969 for the film "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" He earned a Los Angeles Drama Critics award for best stage design for "Idiot's Delight" in 1970.

His theater sets included Broadway's "Our Town" in 1938, "Joy to the World" in 1948, and the first revolving stage for Moss Hart's "Lady in the Dark" in 1947. He designed and directed "The Magic Flute" for New York's Metropolitan Opera and "Turandot" for the San Francisco Opera. He also designed and directed television's "Gunsmoke" and the series "Royal Canadian Mounted Police" for Canadian television.
