I have been involved in putting together a startup over the last 12 months or so.I have talked about it before – we are called Springboard Opera, and out there to do the opera thing a bit differently.So far, we have got ourselves a company to put everything into, and a board to run it.We are nearly ready to jump out into the big wide world, so watch this space.Skills-based even, which is a bit hard when there are only a few of us.What I have learned from this experience is this:As tempting as it is to do the high-profile (and fun) things that everyone can see, it is also really important to do the things in the background as well.Like setting up in a structure that is going to serve our needs into the future as much as we can see it – which is probably not much!Which is, I guess, the beginnings of creating an integrated organisation.When the directors understand what our goals are and how we are going to get there, we can also see the linkages.Seeing and being aware of the linkages is really important.In this case, setting up Springboard Opera in the right way legally means that we have maximum flexibility to respond at speed as events unfold and circ*mstances change.In 2023 and beyond, it is not good enough to be presented with an attractive / profitable /sustainable opportunity only to find that for an unrelated reason, it cannot be done.Flexibility is the word in 2023; with flexibility comes speed.Because if we cannot do it, someone else can.As far as we can, the new directors of Springboard Opera need to build in maximum flexibility and therefore maximum speed to respond to opportunities as they arise.NOW is the thing – not next week!So, keep watching, ‘cos you’re going to be hearing from us (lots).I guess that this is what you call the living laboratory…New, innovative, integrated, fast and energising, linked and challenging for 2023. I love this reminder to slow down. When we are panicked, we want to jump in and save or fix. How often do we say something just for the sake of saying something while on the podium?Leaders can remember that our advice:- may not always be as good as we think it is- may not be solving the right problem - may be a mechanism to gain control when we are stressedOf course, a leader needs to give advice. Experience plus reflection create knowledge. If we keep doing the wrong thing, we just have a lot of experience doing the wrong thing. This is one way we can rethink when we look for "experience" in our leaders.
