He was 81. A scholar of medieval literature, Mr. Chapman was an emeritus professor of English at Drew University in Madison, and edited the fifth edition of Roget's International Thesaurus, published by HarperCollins in 1992. He also edited the New Dictionary of American Slang (1986), the Thesaurus of American Slang (1989), both-published by HarperCollins, and the fourth edition of Roget's (1977). Mr.
Chapman overhauled the subject headings Roget's, but resisted pressure to rearrange the thesaurus in alphabetical order. Mr. Chapman was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Huntington, W.Va. He earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Michigan.
He joined Drew's faculty after working as cosmetics line, has died at age. 90. Princess Borghese died Jan. 19 at her home in Montreux, Switzerland, her family said Thursday. Princess Borghese, born Mar-cella Fazi, joined the Roman noble family in 1937 with her marriage to Prince Paolo Borghese, the Duke of Bomarzo.
The prince, who died in 1985, was a descendant of a fafhily that produced one pope Paul as well as Rome's most famous public park and one of its loveliest art galleries, the Galleria Borghese. In 1958, Princess Borghese used her own cosmetics recipes to launch Princess Marcella Borghese, Inc. as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the cosmetics giant Revlon Inc. The line, comprising upscale skin products and makeup as well as spa treatments, is sold in some of the most exclusive department stores. Revlon sold the company to Saudi investors in 1991.
Princess Borghese's title was granted to the family by Paul V. PRINCESS MARCELLA B0RGHESE, an Italian socialite who created her own luxury engulfed the poor children of Harlem, died at age 64. Mr. Brown died on Saturday from a lung condition. Published at the height of the civil rights movement, "Man-child in the Promised Land" quickly became a best seller. Though not published as a memoir, the tale of a boyhood spent among killers, drug addicts and prostitutes closely paralleled Mr.
Brown's life. Born in 1937 in Harlem, Mr. Brown was kicked out of school when he was 8, joined a gang at age 9, was shot in the leg during a burglary at 13 and was confined to a reform school at 14. Eventually, he attended Howard University, graduating in 1965, and then went to law school at Stanford and Rutgers universities. The book evoked Harlem's astonishing culture of violence and bore witness to the way drugs had affected the neighborhood starting in the 1950s.
"Promised Land" sold more than 4 million copies and was translated into 14 languages. It sells more than 30,000 copies annually and is required reading in many high schools and colleges. His second book, "The Children of Ham," published in 1976, told the story of a group of Harlem teen-agers who escape from the influence of heroin. Mr. Brown spent much of the following two decades writing magazine articles, lecturing and teaching.
In later years, he worked on a book comparing his own childhood experience to those of children growing up in Harlem in the 1980s, during the a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Church. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. MINNIE PEARSON SCHENCK, 78, of SOUTH RIVER, died Monday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, after a sudden illness.
She worked in the shipping and receiving department at Bristol Myers Squibb, New Brunswick, for 28 years, retiring in 1989. She belonged to the Quarter Century Club and Squibb's Retiree Club. She was a member of the Middlesex County Juvenile Conference Committee, the South River Women's Club and the South River Democratic Com- Ixj. nl 1 was a poll worker for the election board. She was a mem-fa of Union Bap-t i Church, South River, where she sang with the Senior Choir and was member and past president of the Missionary Society, a pastor's aide, Sunday school member and secretary.
Born in Earleysville, she lived in Union Beach, Keyport, Newark and Edison before moving to South River in 1948. She was predeceased by her parents, Obie and Grace Washington; her former husband, Samuel Pearson and two sons, Samuel Pearson Jr. and Carey Mark Pearson. Surviving are her husband, Walter F. Schenck; three daughters, Sandra Pearson Hill of East Brunswick, Denise Pearson Stewart of Piano, Texas, and Deborah Pearson of North Brunswick; two sons, Drew Pearson of Piano, Texas, and Andre Pearson of Omaha, a stepdaughter, Mary C.

The Associated Press ANI PACHEN, a prominent figure in the Tibetan freedom struggle, died Saturday in Dha-ramsala, India, the seat of the Dalai Lama's government-in-exile in northern India.
She was 69. The Association of Former Political Prisoners said in a statement Wednesday that Ms. Pa-chen died in her home within days of her return from a Buddhist pilgrimage in eastern India. The statement said she had become ill with stomach problems. Ms.
Pachen was born in 1933 in a Tibetan province that was invaded by China starting in 1950. Ms. Pachen's father was a leader in the resistance movement, and she took over when he died in 1958. She led 600 men into the mountains to wage a guerrilla war against the Chinese. The rebellion exploded into a massive uprising in Lhasa in 1959, but was crushed by the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army.
Ms. Pachen was arrested in 1960 while trying to flee to India and spent the next 21 years in jail, several of them enduring forced labor. She was released in 1981 and participated in demonstrations against Chinese rule in the 1980s. The demonstrations, the first since 1959, touched off unrest that led to martial law in Tibet in 1989. Fearing arrest, Ani Pachen escaped to India.
She lived in the Dalai Lama's headquarters until her death.
